Awadh ke Qasbati Rang

Beyond Lucknow, deep into the hinterland, lie the qasbas of Awadh. Many of these settlements predate urban centres, evolving as spaces of Sufi and Bhakti traditions and learning, where local art forms and cultural expressions flourished.

The qasba was a space of coexistence and cultural expression. Inder Sabha, folk theatre and Ramlila were popular forms of expression. Sufi poets composed verse in praise of the Prophet Mohammad, Hazrat Ali and Lord Krishna, while festivals became occasions for an interfaith celebration of syncretism.

Awadh's qasbas enriched the literary and philosophical culture, customs, cuisine and crafts of Lucknow. More than this, the qasbati ethos of coexistence and kinship became an intrinsic part of the Awadhi way of life.

Awadh ke Qasbati Rang brings together the traditions, crafts, music, performance, language and everyday practices that shaped this world, celebrating the richness of qasbati tehzeeb and its enduring contribution to the cultural life of Awadh.
